Executive Team

Gary Phillips, President and CEO

Gary came to Marathon with more than 20 years of experience in senior management for high technology firms. His broad experience includes sales, marketing, professional services and general management. Before joining Marathon, Gary served as senior vice president, worldwide sales and services for Avaki, a leading enterprise integration software company. Gary's experience also includes serving as vice president, worldwide sales and services at Bowstreet, a pioneer in the Web services market and as vice president and general manager of the Americas at BroadVision, through the company's acquisition of Interleaf. At Interleaf he was vice president of sales and services. He also held executive sales and marketing positions with BBN Corporation, Wang Laboratories, Inc. and NCR Corporation. Gary holds a BS in business administration and marketing from Plymouth State College.

George C. Tranos, Executive Vice President, Strategic Alliances

George has more than 25 years of high tech experience and has served in a variety of operations, engineering and management positions. Prior to joining Marathon, he consulted for and served as vice president of manufacturing for 3Com after its acquisition of Synernetics, Inc., the industry leader in Ethernet switching products. He also helped found the Alliant Computer Systems Corporation, a developer of parallel processing supercomputers. At Alliant, he held several senior management roles including vice president of manufacturing and worldwide customer service. He has also held several senior operations and management positions at Digital Equipment Corporation. George holds a BS in chemical engineering from Tufts University and an MBA in operations research from Boston University.

Jerald H. Melnick, Chief Technology Officer

Jerry is responsible for Marathon’s technology roadmap that is driving the convergence of high availability and virtualization technologies. Under Jerry’s leadership, Marathon is developing the first-ever fault tolerant-class software solution for virtual environments. Built in partnership with XenSource, this cutting edge product was awarded “Best New Technology” at VMworld 2007. Before joining Marathon, he held executive positions at PPGx, Inc. and Belmont Research as well as management and technical roles at Digital Equipment Corporation, where he was responsible for the development and deployment of mission-critical platforms to support enterprise-computing environments. He led a variety of system and product development efforts in the area of operating systems, network communications, database systems, and computing languages. Jerry holds a BS in chemistry from Beloit College and graduate work in computer engineering and computer science at Boston University.

Dan Sullivan, Chief Financial Officer

Dan has a wealth of experience as CFO in venture backed, entrepreneurial companies. Prior to joining Marathon, Dan was CFO of PhyFlex Networks in Westford which was sold in an asset sale to Ciena Corp. Before PhyFlex, he was CFO of venture backed Sand Video, which he joined pre-revenue and helped grow the business successfully before it was acquired by Broadcom. Previously, he was CFO and EVP of Operations at NetSilicon. During his tenure at NetSilicon, he led the successful spin out of the company from its parent, managed their S-1 filing for their IPO and then its eventual sale to Digi International, Inc. Earlier in his career, he spent a number of years in senior finance positions at Telebit, which was sold to Cisco Systems, and Apollo Computer. He holds a B.A. in Biology from Merrimack College and an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University.

Steven Keilen, Vice President, Marketing

Steve has 20 years of marketing experience in technology companies ranging in size from Fortune 200 to pre-revenue start-ups. Prior to joining Marathon, he was Vice President, Industry Marketing at Stratus Technologies. Prior to Stratus, Mr. Keilen was Executive Vice President at Interactive Silicon, an early stage start-up. Previously, he was Chief Marketing Officer at Forgent Networks (formerly VTEL), a conferencing and broadband service provider. Mr. Keilen was Marketing Director, Compaq Computer Corporation. He has also held key marketing and management positions in the US, France and Japan over 12 year period with Hewlett-Packard Company. Steve holds a BS from Michigan State University.

David Mazursky, Vice President, Services

Dave has a proven background in building professional services organizations, as well as providing leadership to technical support functions. Prior to joining Marathon, he was at Lucent Technologies in the Network Systems Group where he led the new product introduction organization in design and deployment of Next Generation VoIP products. Previously, he led Professional Services for Telica, Inc. where he built their professional services business prior to its acquisition by Lucent in 2004. Prior, Mr. Mazursky held senior management positions at Archstone, Stratus Technologies, Ascend Communications and Data General Corporation. Dave holds a BS in Mathematics and Systems Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.
